Writing for Kids offers a variety of workshops & readings for students, teachers and aspiring authors!

1. In the Path of Great Bear - Book Reading and Environmental Workshop on Grizzlies, Black Bears and Bear Safety
  • Talk about bears, preserving and protecting their habitat, bear tracks, facts & safety
  • Many hands-on activities and artifacts
  • A lively presentation of stories and songs where children are encouraged to participate
  • Suitable for Grades K - 4
  • Maximum of 50 participants
  • 1-hour session - cost $250 (fees negotiable depending on number of students, traveling time & number of workshops presented)
2. Magic in the Mountains - Book Reading and Environmental Talk on Mountain Environments, and the "magic" of having a wonderful illustrator who can "hide" secret shapes
  • Talk about mountain habitat and native animals, tracks & facts, and the magic you might find on a mountain walk
  • Artifacts to touch and hold
  • Children are encouraged to look for hidden shapes in the illustrations and are also taught how to make their own illustrations with "hidden shapes"
  • Suitable for Grades K - 4
  • Maximum of 50 participants
  • 1-hour session - cost $250 (fees negotiable depending on number of students, traveling time & number of workshops presented)
3. Where Wolves Are Wild - Book Reading and Environmental Talk on Wolves and animal families, and preserving and protecting animal habitat
  • Talk about wolves, tracks and facts
  • Emphasizes families of animals and their needs, finding their tracks and wolf shapes hidden within the brilliant illustrations
  • Suitable for Grades K - 4
  • Maximum of 50 participants
  • 1-hour session - cost $250 (fees negotiable depending on number of students, traveling time & number of workshops presented)

4. Teaching Kids the Writing Process - Suitable for ALL AGES
  • What makes a good children's story? With Powerpoint slides and actual edits of the early stages of our books, kids learn about the writing, editing, illustrating and design process of producing a best-selling children's book
  • Learn how we taught over 100 grade 5 children how to edit, helped them edit the final drafts of our book and then included their names as assistant editors on the back of "Where Wolves Are Wild"
  • Suitable for Grades 3 - 7
  • Maximum of 150 participants
  • 1-hour session - cost $250

5. Never Bug a Bear - Book Reading with illustrations, interactive for younger children, Humphrey the Bug teaches us:
  • About preserving and protecting wild animal habitat
  • In this workshop,we can also highlight the writing and illustrating process used to compose this beautifully illustrated book
  • This workshop is suitable for K - 3 or can easily be conformed to interest grades 4 - 6

6. Self-Publishing 101 - Writing for Children
  • How we wrote, illustrated and published four successful children's books (Two Canadian best-sellers, 2 finalists in the Alberta Book Awards)
  • Take a burning desire to write environmental books for kids

7. Author-in-Residence Program with Carol McTavish
  • Carol McTavish, 38 years extensive teaching experience in grades 1-7 Learning Support, ESL, Language Arts and Environmental Education
  • Alberta Excellence in Teaching Awards Finalist
  • We will guide your class through an initial presentation on writing using our books and our own "real life" writing and publishing experience
  • With initial consultations with your staff, we will then develop a program suited to your classroom needs (we recommend five to ten days)
  • We have developed programs for inner city schools in Vancouver with primarily ESL students and with advanced and gifted students in alternate schools
  • We particularly enjoy working with grade 2 and 3 students to develop their early writing skills
  • Numerous recommendations supplied upon request
  • Cost $350/day
