Book Review: In the Path of Great Bear
by Julie Baquiran for The Odyssey

In the Path of Great Bear is a mustbuy book for any outdoor enthusiast-especially those with children.

Local artists Carol McTavish, Lori Nunn and Linden Wentzloff have created a brilliant children’s book based on a true story about a young girl who is passionate about the oudoors.

Filled with educational poetry and eye-opening illustrations, this book has many lessons for both young and old alike...

It is interesting how the authors can tell this tale and not represent Great Bear as a creature that should be feared. Instead, he is portrayed as deserving of our respect-especially when we are visiting his home. We are aware that both man and bears love the outdoors but that it is up to us to look out for them. After all, it turns out that both Katie and Great Bear have the same secret spot, an old spruce tree with crooked limbs, where the bark has been rubbed and polished away…a beautiful spot where Katie can sit and look over the mountain slope and…Great Bear can scratch his back!

A portion of the sales of this book are donated to support projects for preserving ecosystems and maintaining healthy mountain parks.
"In the Path of Great Bear is filled with real-life details of a grizzly bear's life. I appreciate the authentic portrayal of the bear's behaviour and how people can share the landscape."
National Park Interpreter
"Lori and Carol delivered a wonderful, hands-on, visual, tactile, knowledgeable and well-organized presentation on bears using their book, 'In the Path of Great Bear'. The presentation kept all the kindergarten children engaged throughout the entire 45-minute presentation. Their passion and committment were evident."
Claire LePage, teacher (Kindergarten)
"Wow! Fantastic presentation! This workshop was better than I expected. Not only was your presentation informative and engaging, I thought you were all personable and generous with your information and personal experience. Thank You!"

Thank you!

It was the day after Halloween and there were two amazing authors at ERS. They were really good at writing. I loved the way that they wrote the Path of Great Bear. It reminded me of the first bear in my life. I was surprised by how the bear didn’t see the person. I supposed that she was really quiet. It was a really good book. It was the best book I’ve ever read.
Brett, 3B
There before me stood two amazing authors! They were no ordinary authors; they had two books in their hands! I supposed that the book was called Magic in the Mountains. The other one was called In the Path of Great Bear. As they read it to me I noticed Katie found a fossil when Ethan was up in the rock. As I ran my eye across the page there were fossils all over the rocks. I was surprised that their mountains were beautiful. Then I looked out the window and I saw the same thing that was in the picture. I loved the book. Thank you.
