Dear
Mrs. McTavish,
Thank you for coming to Lena Shaw Elementary School as a visiting author in our Grade Two classrooms this past January. We were particularly excited to have you as part of our Indigo Love of Reading Author-in-Residence program.
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you formally for your contributions
to the learning of our students and the staff.
Our students really enjoyed your visit. They were inspired as both readers and
writers. They absolutely loved learning about black and grizzly bears and they
are still talking about Humphrey and how he taught them about the importance
of protecting wild animal habitats in the book “Never
Bug a Bear”... read more |

Dear Mrs. McTavish,
Thank you for coming to Lena Shaw Elementary School as a visiting author in our Grade Two classrooms this past January. We were particularly excited to have you as part of our Indigo Love of Reading Author-in-Residence program.
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you formally for your contributions to the learning of our students and the staff.
Our students really enjoyed your visit. They were inspired as both readers and writers. They absolutely loved learning about black and grizzly bears and they are still talking about Humphrey and how he taught them about the importance of protecting wild animal habitats in the book “Never Bug a Bear”.
The students are still avidly using their personal ‘idea books’ to help them find important topics for their writing, and often come in from recess and lunch with a page full of new ideas for stories and poems. The anthologies that they created with you are constantly being read during silent, shared and buddy reading.
One of the highest points of your visit was on the last day when all of the students got to see the culmination of all their hard work and were able to share it with their parents, peers and even the media, at the very successful book launch in the gym.
In the words of the grade two students “We love Mrs. McTavish, her ‘friend’ Humphrey
and all of the super strong verbs and adjectives that she taught us!”
We discovered that it was a valuable use of time, not just for students, but staff as well. In fact, it was an unexpected benefit for my teachers, as working alongside you became a really valuable form of staff development for them as teachers.
Thanks for all your great work here, your enthusiasm, and your skill as a teacher-extraordinaire. It was such a great learning opportunity for our students, and the staff as well, that we are anxious to book you in next fall for a repeat performance.
Kudos to you for a job well done!
Sincerely,
Dr. E. Carlson
